Road pricing trial with passenger cars

The trial is being conducted for the purpose of evaluating the overall possibilities of road tolls with regard to technology, system costs, implementation in practice, user behaviour, user understanding of the system, and social economy.

Where

Three geographical trial areas, namely Aarhus, Copenhagen, and the whole of Denmark. Geographically, the focus is on the larger cities, where congestion currently poses a challenge.

When

The trial started in November 2023 and ends in July 2025. This will be followed by an analysis and evaluation.

Who

A select group of 2,200 citizens will participate in the trial. The trial is being carried out by DTU and Sund & Bælt.

Two toll systems are being trialled

Two toll systems are being tested in the trial:

Kilometre-based tolls

With this system, you pay for kilometres driven. Those participating in the trial will use an app to record the distance they drive. An advantage of this system is that the toll for an entire trip is fixed and known in advance. In the toll zones the payment tariffs will be between DKK 0.5 and DKK 3.25 per kilometer.

Minute-based tolls

With this system, you pay for the time spent driving. An advantage of this system is that it is simpler to implement. In the toll zones the payment tariffs will be between DKK 0.5 and DKK 2 per minute.
