Why

Background of the trial

Economists largely agree that road tolls are a good way to tax congestion and the damage and health costs associated with driving.

Funds have been allocated for looking at how tolls work in practice with regard to congestion, the climate, health, road safety, and the environment.

The trial is being conducted for the purpose of evaluating the overall possibilities of road tolls with regard to technology, system costs, implementation in practice, user behaviour, user understanding of the system, and social economy.

A real-life trial will produce the best results

The trial will investigate behavioural effects and users’ understanding of the solutions by way of existing technologies and the selected participants. We’re conducting a large-scale test of how the technological solutions work in practice.

The trial has been designed by researchers from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

The trial’s results and recommendations will provide input for the political negotiations on the future taxation of cars, which is expected in 2025.

Why – questions and answers

Does the trial mean that we will have road tolls in Denmark?

The trial does not amount to a permanent introduction of road tolls for cars. This is an experiment, the results of which will underpin political discussions and negotiations on the taxation of cars in 2025.
