Focus on the two largest cities in Denmark
The trial focused on the two largest cities in Denmark, where congestion, road safety and health are the biggest challenges. Therefore, we were primarily testing both minute- and kilometre-based charges in Aarhus and Copenhagen and surrounding suburbs.
In the rest of the country, we were testing kilometre-based charges, including the suburbs of Odense and Aalborg.
The trial participants tested different toll models and geographies. Therefore, some trial participants only tested in suburbs and city centres in Copenhagen, while others tested in the entire country. The driving budget of the trial participants was adjusted according to their driving patterns and number of toll zones.
Aarhus
There was two toll zones in Aarhus:
- Aarhus City: Higher charge on weekdays between 7-9 a.m. and 3-5 p.m.
- Aarhus Suburb: Higher charge on weekdays between 7-9 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. In Aarhus Suburb, both a time- and kilometre-based solution was tested.
Copenhagen
There was two toll zones in Copenhagen:
- Copenhagen City: Higher charge on weekdays between 7-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m.
- Copenhagen Suburbs: Higher charge on weekdays between 7-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m. In Copenhagen Suburb, both a time- and kilometre-based solution was tested.
The rest of the country
There was toll zones in Odense and Aalborg and their suburbs with the same charge levels as Copenhagen and Aarhus. In addition, there was a zone for the whole country, where the charge was lower than in the four cities and their suburbs. Throughout the country, the charge was higher on weekdays between 7-9 a.m. and 3-5 p.m.
